One game, many names

If you've played it under another name, it's probably the same game: two dice, the higher die is the tens and 21 beats everything.

The most common names

In Germany, at least two dozen

In German alone the game has a huge number of local names: besides Mäxchen and Meier you'll hear Mäx or Mäxle, Meiern, Mäxchen Meier, Lügen, Lügenpaschen, Riegen, Einundzwanzig, Mexican, Mexico and Meterpeter. Many come from prefixes meaning "lie" or "cheat", such as Lügenmax, Schwindelmäx and Schummelmax.

Cousins that aren't the same game

  • Liar's Dice, Perudo, Dudo: everyone has several dice and you bet on how many of a value are on the whole table.
  • 吹牛 (chuīniú) or 大话 (dàhuà): the Chinese take on Liar's Dice, with five dice each.
  • Bluff: Richard Borg's 1986 boxed game, winner of the 1993 Spiel des Jahres.
